Plant protection

The aim of plant protection measures is to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases and pests in cultivated plants.

Maize cultivation is prohibited in the Principality of Liechtenstein in calendar year 2025 on the basis of Art. 2, 4 and 13 CH-PGesV, Art. 2 CH-PGesV-WBF-UVEK and Directive No. 6 of the Federal Office for Agriculture of July 16, 2019, provided that maize was already cultivated on the plots in question in calendar year 2024.

An appeal against this general ruling will be withdrawn with suspensive effect on the basis of Art. 116 para. 3 let. a LVG.

Fire blight is a highly contagious, dangerous and notifiable bacterial disease.

Caused by the bacterium - Erwinia amylovora - it threatens pome fruit trees (apple, pear, quince) and various wild and ornamental shrubs of the Rosaceae family.

Since 2008, the state's control strategy has been based on the protection of varietal gardens and valuable high-stem stands (protected objects). In and around these protected objects, more intensive fire blight control is carried out within a radius of 500 meters. In the rest of the area, the owner of the fruit trees is responsible for monitoring.

In the event of a suspected case, the municipality (forester/head of the construction group) must be informed.

The marketing and planting of the following fire blight host plants is prohibited:

  • Cotoneaster Ehrh.
  • Stranvaesia Lindl.

Special permits are regulated in the Ordinance on Agricultural Terms and the Recognition of Agricultural Holdings (Landwirtschaftliche Begriffs- und Anerkennungsverordnung; LBAV; LGBl. 2009 No. 264).

Special permits are issued in the form of individual permits in writing and for a limited period of time by the Office for the Environment, Agriculture Department.
